How is trample damage assigned on a Spitemare?

Asked by dragonstryke58 8 years ago

This generated a discussion in my playgroup. I attacked someone who had 18 life with a 24/24 Managorger Hydra. The defending player had 2 Spitemares available to block.

From my understanding, even if my hydra were blocked, the spitemares could only assign a total of 6 damage to me since i would assign 3 damage to each spitemare (lethal damage) and trample the rest over to the player, dealing 18 damage and killing them.

Another player said I would die too if a spitemare blocked because the spitemare could assign 24 damage to me. I am asserting that is not the case since trample lets me only assign 3 damage to each spitemare. Which is the root of our discussion.

Does trample allow me to deal only 3 to each spitemare and kill the player? Or do I get hit in the face for 24 because trample does not block that damage?

Cards do what they say. No more, no less. Spitemare says that it deals "that much damage" meaning as much as it took. Each Spitemare took 3 damage, so can deal 3 damage to you. You are correct they could deal a max of 6 damage to you.

Note that if you deal enough damage to the defending player to kill him or her, you won't take any damage.

Spitemare's ability is a triggered ability. It will trigger when combat damage is dealt, but the defending player will lose the game as a state-based action before those abilities are even put onto the stack.
