How does the ability Scavenge interact with */* creatures?

So, lets say that I am using Varolz, the Scar-Striped and have a Nightmare in my graveyard. I have 6 swamps out on the battlefield. So if I used Varolz's ability and scavenged the Nightmare, would it give me 6 +1/+1 counters or would it give me none?

Six.

Nightmare has what's called a characteristic-defining ability. CDAs function in all zones and at all times, so Nightmare always has P/T equal to the number of Swamps you control, even when it's in your graveyard.

Note that some CDAs, such as that of Sewer Nemesis, require a choice. In these cases, the CDA can't function in other zones because that choice hasn't been made, so it will default to 0.
