How does Spellskite interact with counterspells?

Asked by JWiley129 11 years ago

This came up in a game last night where I had a Spellskite on board and I cast Sphinx of the Steel Wind . My opponent Counterlash ed it, which was fine. My question is, since it doesn't appear to be on gatherer, can I redirect the target of a counterspell like Counterlash to Spellskite even though it isn't on the stack?

No. You can target Counterlash with Spellskite 's ability, but the redirection effect won't do anything. You can only change a target to a legal target. Spellskite isn't a legal target for Counterlash , so you can't change the target.

Ok, that's what I thought. Would it be the same thing if I were to give Spellskite hexproof and redirect an opponent's Lightning Bolt to Spellskite ?

Yes. You wouldn't actually be able to redirect Lightning Bolt to Spellskite if Spellskite had hexproof. The ability would just do nothing. You could, however, redirect Lightning Bolt first, then give Spellskite hexproof to counter Lightning Bolt .
