How does Protection interact with Enchantments?
Asked by Lhurgyof 12 years ago
For example, let's say your opponent Arrest s your llanowar-elf.
Next turn, I tap my Mother of Runes , giving the elf protection from white until end of turn.
Does the Arrest fall off? Please cite a specific rule or quote a rule with your answer, because my playgroup doesn't believe the enchantment would fall off. They think that if it works, then giving the creature shroud would also pop off enchantments.
And in addition, would giving protection from artifacts pop equipment off of a creature?
Here it is for you...
502.7c - A permanent with protection can't be enchanted by Auras that have the stated quality. Such Auras attached to the permanent with protection will be put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based effect. (See rule 420, "State-Based Effects.")
502.7d - A permanent with protection can't be equipped by Equipment that have the stated quality. Such Equipment become unattached from that permanent, but remain in play. (See rule 420, "State-Based Effects.")

Protection from XX defends against 4 things, D.E.B.T:
D - All Damage from XX sources is prevented
E - Enchantments and Equipments that are XX can't be attached
B - Creatures that are XX can't Block it
T - It can't be Targeted by XX spells or abilities from XX sources
Because of the "E" part of all that, giving a creature protection from White, as in your example, will make all White enchantments un-attach from it, sending them to the graveyard. Shroud doesn't do this because aura enchantments only target one time: when they're on the stack being cast as a spell. There are older printings of a few auras that can be read to imply some kind of "continuous targeting", but nothing in the game works like that.

Tel-Jilad Defiance was great for defending against Batterskull for that very reason. It's so damn expensive to re-equip that it slows people down.

If you just waited 3 more days, you would have been a whole year late.

If a creature has an enchantment on them, but gains shroud afterwards, the enchantment stays. The enchantment no longer has to target the creature once it's already enchanting it.
If a creature is enchanted by a permanent of color X, then gains protection from X, the enchantment slips off then is forced to go wherever the game rules state afterwards (which I believe would be the graveyard in most circumstances).
I also believe the same is for the artifacts/equipments.
Once I have time to locate the specific ruling I'll put it here. (or maybe some kind Samaritan will do it for me in the meantime)
