How does Havengul Lich works?
Asked by 33demano 10 years ago
Hi there, I builded a U/B deck with this card and I can't finally understood how does it works. Does it let me cast any creature from a graveyard paying "1" + CMC, doesn't it? And the creature I cast, does it remain in the battlefield all the time like a normal summon?

Yes, it's pretty much 1+CMC. And it will stay on the battlefield, just as if you had normally cast it.

Note that you have to pay the actual mana cost of the creature, not just the converted mana cost. For example, if you target Inferno Titan then you have to come up with some Red mana if you want to cast it.

Thanks! So, basically, I can cast everything from a graveyard paying the actual mana cost of a creature (for example, i cant summon Inferno Titan since I don't use red mana, but I can summon Agent of the Fates ) and it will remain as a creature on the battlefield. Also Lich can gain any active ability this creature have.

Note: Not "active" but "activated". It is a type of abilities defined as I wrote above. Only abilities written in such format can be inherited by the Lich. If I use your Agent of the Fates as an example, the Lich wouldn't gain any abilities here, because none of the Agent's abilities is activated (one of them is static, the other is triggered for the record).

To be clear, activated abilities are written as "Cost : Effect", and those are the only abilities Havengul Lich can get. He won't get any abilities from Agent of the Fates , and if you do somehow grab Inferno Titan then he'll only get the "R: (this object) gets +1/+0 until end of turn" ability.

Yeah I know that, i was just saying that I can cast him from the graveyard hahaha

Yes. Basically, when you activate Havengul Lich 's ability, you target any creature card in any graveyard. When that ability resolves, it creates an effect that, until end of turn, allows you to cast that creature from that graveyard following normal rules for casting creatures (basically as though that creature was in your hand). You will have to pay its mana cost as usual, because Havengul Lich doesn't say anything like "you may cast it without paying its mana cost". The creature, if it successfully resolves, will stay on your side of the battlefield as though it were normally summoned.
Also, if that creature happens to have any activated abilities (those written as [cost]: [effect], like Duskmantle Guildmage ), Havengul Lich will gain those abilities until end of turn.
