How does Godhead of Awe work here?

Asked by Zabin 12 years ago

The third ruling states:

10/1/2009: Godhead of Awe's ability overwrites other effects that set a creature's power and toughness to specific values only if those effects existed before the Godhead entered the battlefield. It will not overwrite effects that modify power or toughness (whether from a static ability, counters, or a resolved spell or ability), nor will it overwrite effects that set power and toughness which come into existence after the Godhead enters the battlefield. Effects that switch the creature's power and toughness are always applied after any other power or toughness changing effects, including that of the Godhead.

For this example let's say I have an Enlisted Wurm with a card:Shiv's Embrace attached to it

You play Godhead of Awe , then cast Acidic Slime and destroy my card:Shiv's Embrace.

What willl happen? Will my creature's toughness go to zero? It was a 1/1 who just lost his +2/+2...

As I understand it, and Epoch may correct me here, with all those in play, your guy was a 3/3 (p/t set to 1/1 then +2/+2 from the embrace). Order of operations is go to whatever the set number is (in this case 1/1) then work your addition and subtraction simultaneously. Anyway, no your Enlisted Wurm will be a 1/1 because of the Godhead of Awe . then you kill it and have your wurm back :)

abdulbaqr is correct.

Effects that modify P/T by setting them to hard values are applied in layer 7B.

Effects that modify P/T without setting them are applied in layer 7C.

Therefore, your Enlisted Wurm will be set to 1/1 by Godhead of Awe , then get +2/+2 from card:Shiv's Embrace. Removing card:Shiv's Embrace will make Enlisted Wurm a 1/1 again.

Note in the Gatherer ruling you quoted that "[This effect] will not overwrite effects that modify power or toughness (whether from a static ability, counters, or a resolved spell or ability)."

abdulbaqr is correct, with Godhead of Awe on the battlefield your Enlisted Wurm 's P/T will be set to 1, then have the +2/+2 from card:Shiv's Embrace applied making it a 3/3. After your opponent destroys card:Shiv's Embrace with the Slime's ETB trigger your Wurm will remain as a 1/1.
