How do multiple Winding Constrictors and Metallic Mimics interact?
Asked by Urge 7 years ago
From what little I understand of the Magic rulebook, Winding Constrictor's effect is a replacement effect, while Metallic Mimic's second effect is either a trigger or gives creatures entering your battlefield their own trigger. I'm probably definitely wrong on the second part.
I want to know what happens when multiple copies of these cards are on the field at once.
Scenario: Let's say my board is 2x Winding Constrictors and 3x Metallic Mimics, each of type Servo. I cast a fourth Metallic Mimic, also naming Servo. How many counters does the fourth Mimic get?
The way I see it, each of the Mimics already on board will give the new Mimic a separate counter trigger. Then the Constrictors will replace these so that each trigger gives 3 counters, and the 4th Mimic will ETB with 9 counters.
Is this correct? Or is Metallic Mimic also a replacement and the last card only gets 5 counters?
Thanks in advance

So you know how to tell a replacement effect: it will almost always have one or more of "as", "with", or "instead" somewhere in the text of the abilities. There are a couple other constructions that don't quite look this way, but they only show up very rarely. Also, a triggered ability always starts with one of the words "when", "whenever", or "at". Metallic Mimic's 1st and 3rd abilities are replacement effects.

Metallic Mimic is a replacement effect, but it works as branches and you end up with 9 counters.
