How do Mentor of the meek and Griffin Rider interact?
Asked by Age 13 years ago
Alright, I am currently modifying my Griffin Deck, and i was planing on putting in 2 Honor of the Pure , as i just bought 2. Did some research and if i'm not mistaken Honor of the Pure overrides Mentor of the Meek s ability, making the mentor unable to use his ability.
I forget the exact resoning why. maybe someone would wish to recap on why. but anyways my question...
Does Griffin Rider enter as a 1/1 then get the buff if there's a griffin on the field. Or does it enter the battlefield as a 4/4 with flying thus rendering the mentor useless again?
If mentor is not rendered usless mind explaining to my why not so in this scenario, but so with the Honor of the Pure scenario? Thank you.
Continuous effects like Honor of the Pure or Tempered Steel are applied immediately and instantaneously. With an Honour in play, your 2/2 creature will come into play as a 3/3, and will not trigger Mentor of the Meek at all.
Griffin Rider has the exact same kind of ability, except that it has a condition. The ability is still applied immediately and instantaneously. If you control a Griffin, the Rider will come into play as a 4/4 and not trigger Mentor.

The ability on Griffin Rider is a static ability, not a triggered ability. Static abilities don't use the stack, so there wouldn't be a situation where you could resolve Mentor's ability before it got the buff. The same is true for Honor of the Pure. Static abilities don't use the stack so you can't respond to the buff.

Thank you both very much for answering all my questions and being thorough. Very insightful, thank you.

Sorry slight edit. forgot to mention honor of the pure overide's mentor only because it bumps say a 2/2 to a 3/3, before mentor gets to use its ability. that's what i meant by overiding and rendering it useless... as i'm sure you know.
