How do I apply the life gained and life lost for Sanguine Bond,Exquisite Blood and Gray Merchant of Asphodel
Asked by zombie41 11 years ago
Say I have a Sanguine Bond and a Exquisite Blood on the battlefield. then I play a Gray Merchant of Asphodel with a total of 4 devotion to black. If I use the special ability of Exquisite Blood 1st and the Sanguine Bond 2nd the resolution is opponent loses 16 life and I gain 8. But if I use the special ability of the Sanguine 1st and the Exquisite 2nd my opponent would lose 8 life and I would gain 16. would I choose the outcome?
With the Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Bond, there is no stacking involved. Both have static abilities which affect life gain and life loss. If you make them lose one life, Exquisite Blood makes you gain one. Then, since you gained one, Sanguine Bond will make them lose one. This causes an unbreakable cycle that continues until your opponent has no life left.

For the record, abilities on cards that start with "when", "whenever", or "at" are called "triggered abilities".
You would get to choose which one triggers first once Gray Merchant of Asphodel 's enter-the-battlefield trigger resolves, because the life gain and life loss happened at the same time.
However, the end result would be your opponent(s) losing infinite life and you gaining infinite life. When you gain life, because of Sanguine Bond , your opponents lose life, which triggers Exquisite Blood , which makes you gain life, which triggers Sanguine Bond , which goes on forever and ever until people lose.
