How Anhelo works with a card that already has Casualty?
Asked by pedroedmarcos 3 years ago
Hey there,
I know that the card hasn't been released yet, but I was wondering. If I have Anhelo, the Painter on the field and he gives all my instants and sorceries Casualty 2, and I cast a card like A Little Chat that already has Casualty 1, how many copies can I get? I mean, do the card now have both Casualties or do they replace each other?
Just to second this, multiple instances of casualty work the same as any similar ability on a spell (cascade, etc). A spell with multiple instances of casualty will let you sacrifice a suitable creature to each casualty ability to make another copy of itself.

There is now official confirmation from the Streets of New Capenna CR changes article that multiple instances of Casualty are paid for and handled separately. I have marked an "Accepted answer" for this question so it can move out of the list of unanswered questions.

The official rules for the new abilities aren't out yet, but there's no crazy new ground being broken here so it's very reasonable to assume that each instance of casualty as an ability will exist independently of each other on the spell that has the ability. So they won't replace each other or be redundant or anything like that.
Casualty as an ability is a replacement effect for how you cast the spell. You get to opt in to it or not as you cast it. If you create a copy of that spell on the stack, you are not given an option to sacrifice to casualty for the copy as you are not casting that copy.
If you cast A Little Chat that Anhelo has upgraded so that it has both casualty 1 & casualty 2, then as you cast A Little Chat you will have the option to sacrifice (neither or) one or both of a creature with power 1 or greater and/or a creature with power 2 or greater. You would then get 0-2 copies of the spell depending on how many creatures you sacrificed.
