Grist, the Hunger Tide is simultaneously off and on the battlefield: Which permanent is he?

This contains Unstable cards, so I'll acknowledge that there might not be a working answer (Like Far Out and Outlaws Merriment).

Say I control Yet Another Aether Vortex. The top card of my library happens to be Grist, the Hunger Tide.

Grist is on the battlefield, meaning he wouldn't be an insect. However, he's also in my library, which is not the battlefield (Which would normally make him an insect).

Is this Grist an Insect Creature?

he's still "on the battlefield". "isn't on the battlefield" and "in a zone that's not the battlefield" are not the same thing. same way that cards that only affect noncreatures can't affect an enchantment creature, despite enchantment being a different type than creature.
