Grand Architect summoning sickness tapping

Asked by McClair_Bear 12 years ago

If I have out a Grand Architect , then play out a Delver of Secrets  Flip , or any creature without haste, can I tap the second creature that turn to produce the 2 colorless mana? I would think so, because the creature is tapping due to Grand Architect s ability.

OR, can I play a Grand Architect out on turn 3, and tap itself for the 2 colorless mana?

Yes to both. As Grand Architect 's ability does not require itself to tap as part of its cost, summoning sickness does not apply to its ability.

It's not really the fact that it doesn't require the architect to tap itself. It's the fact that the ability doesn't have the tap or untap symbol that allows you to activate it regardless of summoning sickness.

(Well, having the tap or untap symbol would require you to tap the architect, but my point is mostly aiming towards the fact that you can activate the architect's ability by tapping himself even while sick)

The tricky part about the Architect is the wording. It says "tap an untapped blue creature", which is an ability completely separate from the notion of summoning sickness. As a part of the cost of activating the ability, you're allowed to tap any blue creature you control regardless of when you played it. Things would be different if the wording was more like "each blue creature you control has 'tap: add 2 mana to your mana pool.'" because, like GoblinsInc was saying, the 'tap' symbol is an indicator of when summoning sickness comes into question.

If Grand Architect's ability said "tap an untapped land" or "tap an untapped enchantment" instead, the mana-producing ability wouldn't work that much differently.

If you play a blue creature on turn one, and another turn two, followed by Grand Architect turn 3, you can tap all three creatures on that turn to play a Wurmcoil Engine .
