Gods and the zones of play

Asked by JWiley129 11 years ago

I'm trying to figure out whether each of the Theran gods card type line, "Legendary Enchantment Creature - God", and the clause "As long as your devotion to X is less than 5, Y is not a creature", is independent of the zone the card is in.

One example, can you Wordly Tutor for Nylea, God of the Hunt if your devotion to green is 3? Or is the "As long as..." clause active regardless of whether the god is in the library, exile, or graveyard? (I think it's pretty obvious the clause is active when the god is on the battlefield)

I meant Worldly Tutor , not Wordly Tutor. That sounds like an Unhinged card.

You would be able to use either Worldly Tutor or Enlightened Tutor to search for the Gods. While in any zone other than the battlefield, they are affected by anything that cares about any of the card types printed on them. It is only while they are in play that their type is dependent on whether or not they meet the devotion requirement.

Or in short: Yes they can be tutored up as a creature because they have "Creature" as their spell type. Or tutored up as an enchantment or legendary, for that matter.

Its when they are in the battlefield, does the game checks whether they met the requirements to become a creature or not, and not anywhere else.

While this is the most probable way the devotion on these cards will work, and I too believe it will work like this, nothing is certain until official FAQ release next monday (I think). This FAQ will most certainly address such questions.

It's certain. Only characteristic-defining abilities work in all zones, and the devotion ability of the Gods isn't written to be a CDA. It would only be a CDA if it said "...isn't a creature card...". As it is, it's a non-CDA ability of a permanent that doesn't say it works in any particular zone, which means it only works on the battlefield.
