Goblin Grenade and Boggart Shenanigans

Asked by aarontoomey 11 years ago

I had Boggart Shenanigans on the field and had a Goblin Grenade in my hand; My friend had only 4 life and I had no other creatures. So I cast Goblin Grenade since Boggart Shenanigans on the field and it had the subtype Goblin, and it never specified what goblin I had to sacrifice, Would I be able to sacrifice the Enchantment to deal the 5 damage killing my friend as the enchantment is a Goblin subtype?

Yes, that is a perfectly legal move. Boggart Shenanigans is considered a Goblin for type purposes, Goblin Grenade does not specify that the Goblin sacrificed must be a creature, so everything works out.

Alright because he said since it was an enchantment I couldn't sacrifice it.

See Ordeal of Thassa for an example where sacrificing the enchantment is built onto the card. Provided you have some means to sacrifice it, you may sacrifice any kind of permanent (assuming nothing is preventing you from doing so).

It's worth explaining that this sort of interaction is the entire point of the Tribal type on the card. Tribal was something introduced in the Lorwyn block (well, technically Future Sight, but nevermind that) as a way to explore interactions like this - letting things that care about a creature type work with things that aren't necessarily creatures.

For example, Elvish Harbinger could get you an an Eyeblight's Ending since it has the Elf subtype, even though it's not an elf.

The inclusion of the Tribal type allows them to put subtypes that are normally reserved only for creatures onto noncreature cards, making those cards into that type for purposes such as this.

I left out a word there in my post - I meant to say that Eyeblight's Ending isn't an Elf creature. It is an Elf; that's the whole point. Pretty significant typo, haha.
