Generator servant + bestow
Asked by Kobisaur 10 years ago
I sac Generator Servant to add two colorless mana to my pool, so I can bestow a Herald of Torment on a random Goblin Rabblemaster . They Doom Blade my Rabblemaster in response. Does the Herald of Torment get haste?
Thanks!
If cast for its bestow cost, it is an Aura spell with enchant creature. It is not a creature spell. Generator Servant only gives haste to things which are cast -as creature spells- not if the thing you cast happens to be a creature.
It will not have haste.

I may be wrong, since it enters the battlefield as a creature if the target of the aura is no longer legal when the spell resolves, but you are still very definitely not casting a creature spell when you put it on the stack. It just resolves as on.

Bestow would read "if you cast this card for it's bestow cost, it's an aura spell""

"702.102d As an Aura spell with bestow begins resolving, if its target is illegal, the effect making it an Aura spell ends. It continues resolving as a creature spell and will be put onto the battlefield under the control of the spells controller. This is an exception to rule 608.3a."
In this case, you cast a bestow, using Generator Servant as an Aura spell targeting Goblin Rabblemaster . Goblin Rabblemaster becomes the target of Doom Blade . The stack looks like this:
Stack 1:Generator Servant adds 2 colorless to the pool, with the ability on the stack.
Stack 2:Doom Blade targeting Goblin Rabblemaster Herald of Torment as a bestow targeting Goblin Rabblemaster using Generator Servant mana.
First Generator Servant ability is put onto the stack. Priority passes. Ability resolves. Stack empties.
Doom Blade goes off targeting Goblin Rabblemaster . Herald of Torment "continues resolving as a creature spell" since as an Aura spell it no longer has a legal target. Since the mana used to cast Herald of Torment was used on a creature spell, Generator Servant 's ability goes off giving Herald of Torment haste.
So, long winded way of saying yes, Herald of Torment does indeed get haste.

But as was described above, Generator Servant does not CARE how the spell RESOLVES, it cares how the spell was CAST, and it was cast as an aura, not a creature.

"If mana is spent on a creature spell...." All Generator Servant cares about is that the mana is used on a creature spell. When Herald of Torment goes off on the stack it is a creature spell, granted an expensive one, because it doesn't have a valid target as an Aura.

Heh, alright. I just asked a judge. You are absolutely right. The mana is spent on an aura spell so it doesn't get haste.

Yup, a spell is cast as soon as you announce targets (if any), pay costs, and put it on the stack. Once it's on there, it's been cast that way even if something changes before it resolves.

Yes. Non creature permanents can have abilities like vigilance and haste but they don't do anything while they aren't creatures. In this case your Herald of Torment would enter the battlefield with haste as a creature. This would still be the case if it entered as an aura then fell off for some reason.
