Foul Renewal Squelching Leeches interaction

Asked by tehhoff 9 years ago

If I cast Foul Renewal and target Squelching Leeches in graveyard, does -X-X from foul renewal = to the number of swamps i control? or would foul renewal be -0-0?

Squelching Leeches has what's called a characteristic-defining ability (CDAs that set P/T are always denoted by the asterisks in the P/T box). CDAs function in all zones and at all times, so Squelching Leeches's P/T is always equal to the number of Swamps you control, no matter what zone Squelching Leeches is in. Foul Renewal will check Squelching Leeches's toughness when Foul Renewal resolves, and the end result is that the -X/-X effect will be equal to the number of Swamps you control.

Epochalyptik I just thought of another question based from this answer. Since CDAs are typically things with star/star and they are always active no matter the state. How come I am seeing decks with Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and Nighthowler combos? since nighthowler is star/star wouldnt that mean if more than 3 creatures are in the GY alesha would not be able to bring nighthowler back since Nighthowler has a CDA?
