Flashback + cost reduction.

Asked by proterran98 2 years ago

Diregraf Rebirth has a cost reduction (1) for each creature that has died that turn. It also has flashback. If I cast it from my graveyard for its flashback cost, is the cost reduction also applied to the flashback cost?

Yes, you get the reduction. Relevant rules as follows.

702.34a Flashback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities: one that functions while the card is in a player’s graveyard and another that functions while the card is on the stack. “Flashback [cost]” means “You may cast this card from your graveyard if the resulting spell is an instant or sorcery spell by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost” and “If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack.” Casting a spell using its flashback ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f–h.

118.9d If an alternative cost is being paid to cast a spell, any additional costs, cost increases, and cost reductions that affect that spell are applied to that alternative cost. (See rule 601.2f.)

This also goes for overload, kicker, etc. When you cast a spell, you determine the total cost like this: First, apply the mana cost or alternate cost you're paying. Then, apply additional costs (like kicker), then effects that increase the cost (like an opponent's Thalia, Guardian of Thraben). Finally, apply cost reductions (like Voracious Reader or Diregraf Rebirth's own effect). It basically makes sure you get the most for your mana.
