First strike and Lethal Damage
Asked by BrownDog5117 13 years ago
Here's the scenario:
My opponent attacks with a couple creatures, 1 including a Mirran Crusader .
I block another one of this attacking creatures with a Baneslayer Angel .
I need the 5 life from Baneslayer's lifelink to not die. However, Mirran Crusader s damage is lethal. Which first strike triggers first?? Does he lethal me first?? or do I gain 5 life first?
I hope this makes sense.

First strike is not a "trigger".
Whenever a creature or multiple creatures with first or double strike attack or block, two combat steps are created. In the first one, all creatures with first strike or double strike assign their damage. Then, in the second one, all other creatures and creatures with double strike assign normal damage.
Therefore, your Baneslayer Angel will kill his Mirran Crusader in the first strike damage step and you will gain 5 life. Your Baneslayer will have 2 damage on it afterwards.

Actually the lifelink will only net you 2 life because baneslayer is only dealing two damage to the crusader.

He's not blocking Mirran Crusader .
For example if he had 3 life and attacked with 2 creatures he blacks 1 and lets Mirran Crusader hit him.
The question is would he live because of Baneslayer Angel 's Lifelink.

evil_monkey As of M10 rulings that's no longer true.
You gain life based on damage, Baneslayer Angel deals 5 damage therefor you gain 5 life.

In that case, you will live. State-based actions are checked after combat damage (or in this case, each combat damage step), which means that they first check after the lifegain from your Baneslayer has already been totaled and added. Therefore, so long as you gained enough life during combat, you will be alive afterward.

When you block a creature, you will be assigning full damage and gaining full life for the creatures power.
Also, everything is done at once now.
When I played in Invasion block, when the MTGO beta was announced, it helped sort out a few things... (Anyone remember Armadillo Cloak ?) It used to be that damage was dealt then state based effects would be checked, and if you were at 0 or less life at that stage you were dead, regardless of lifelink waiting to kick in.
Now since M10, the rules for combat have been simplified. So everything at the damage step happens at once. There is no state based checks between the damage taken and life gained. So in your example, first strike damage is done, and you go from 2 to 3 life.
Also, Lifelink is no longer a triggered effect, it's a static effect. So you are no longer able to double lifelink a creature and get double the life off an attack.
On a side note... Armadillo Cloak is one of the VERY few cards not to receive an errata to state lifelink. Therefore you can still die at the end of combat if your dealt lethal before this effect kicks in, as this is still a triggered effect, not static. the upside is that you could attach it to lifelink creature's and effectively get double lifelink :)

firsyt strike damage goes off at the same time, then regular. first strike creature only deal dmg in the FS step. double strike deals dmg in the FS and regular steps.
the baneslayer hits the thing for 5, and crusader hits you for 2. then the crusader hits you for 2 again along with any other unblocked creatures.

Lol to clear you up supernick, the baneslayer would kill the crusader before it able to assign normal damage.

I would think the First strike damage would hit you gain 5 life then the normal strike.
