Face-down cards

Asked by Not_Sure 9 years ago

If I manifest a card from the top of my library, if it ends up a land, or a non-creature spell, can it be turned face-up? If yes, please explain the method of flipping it.

You will not be able to flip it using the manifest ability. However, there are old morph-related cards that can: Ixidor, Reality Sculptor and Break Open. Assuming the manifested card is a permanent card, it will be turned face up without an issue. If it is an instant or sorcery, you are required to reveal what the card it and then leave it face down as instants and sorceries cannot be on the battlefield. These are the methods for FLIPPING them. Getting them onto the battlefield face up is a lot easier: use effects like Cloudshift to exile and return the manifests. Making manifests change zones turns them face up.

Skirk Alarmist also works.

If I used Cloudshift to exile and return said manifested card does the same rule apply for instants or sorceries(turn them back face-down, assuming the same rule would apply for aura-enchantments as well)? Also, what about lands or enchantment permanents(back face-down from the slammer(exile))? In terms of manifested creature spells, I heard that you could just pay the creature's converted mana cost to turn it face-up. If this tidbit of hearsay is indeed fact, and the manifested creature's mana cost included X, would I just pay X normally?)

If you Cloudshift a manifested instant or sorcery, it will go to exile and then just stay there, as instants and sorceries are not allowed by the game's rules to enter the battlefield.

If you Cloudshift a manifested aura enchantment, it will come back to the battlefield enchanting an object of your choice that it could legally enchant (NOT target, entering the battlefield this way allows you to enchant objects with shroud or hexproof). If there is no object it could legally enchant (e.g. it says echant creature and there are no creatures on the battlefield), then it will just stay in exile.

ANY manifested PERMANENT you Cloudshift will come back face up. It turns face up when it changes zones going to exile, and then it stays that way because nothing says otherwise. A good rule of thumb is that cards always do what the say and nothing more.

If a manifested creature has X in its mana cost you only pay it's converted mana cost to turn it face up. X will be considered 0.
