You don't necessarily have to play a creature for a creature to enter the battlefield under your control. Brimaz, King of Oreskos in particular for BNG is what I am thinking of as a major way to have creatures entering without having to play a creature.

I assume you are wondering how the triggered ability on Ephara, God of the Polis works. The ability triggers at the beginning of each upkeep, be that your's our your opponent's, and checks to see if you had another creature enter the battlefield under your control the turn before that one.
So if you are playing me, and on your turn you play a creature, when my turn starts, if you control Ephara, you will get to draw a card. If you also play a creature on my turn, you draw a card on your turn for it.
