Entering and leaving the battlefield
Asked by Skull_Creed 13 years ago
How does entering and leaving the battlefield abilities work if the creature "dies" before it's even really out there?
For example, Solemn Simulacrum entering the battlefield with two Heartless Summoning s out. Would I get both the land and then the draw?
Another example, Stormblood Berserker enters the battlefield with Bloodthirst trigger active, if someone else has Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite out, would it come in with the counters keeping it alive, or would it die beforehand?
Thanks.

A creature will always enter the battlefield before static effect which kill it or reduce its toughness to 0 or less can cause it to be put into the graveyard. Even if it doesn't stay there past the first check of state-based actions, it still (especially for the purposes of ETB abilities) hit the field.

As soon as something enters the battlefield, any enter battle field abilities, or status effects get applied. Also, a creature can't die, unless it's alive (has entered the battlefield) first. So, in the two situations you're talking about:
Solemn would enter the battlefield, triggering that ability, then die. I'm not 100% on how the stack works with that, though, and will be asking my own question shortly. Draw first, or dig land first?
Stormblood would gain his counters, and have the -2/-2 applied, making him a 1/1.

You would draw first. Solemn enters, its ETB ability goes onto the stack and Solemn is put into the graveyard (both of these happen during state-based checks), and then its death ability would go onto the stack on top of the ETB ability.

Ok, that's what I thought. That's how I've been playing it. I just posted a Q&A about this topic, if you want to post the answer there as well, so I can "close" the thread.

Solemn Simulacrum will enter the battlefield as a 0/0. When state-based actions (SBAs) are checked after it resolves, it dies.
Stormblood Berserker enters the battlefield with 2 +1/+1 counters. Thus, once it resolves and SBAs are checked, it is a 1/1 due to Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite .
