Enchantment enters battlefield..

Asked by dennisd12 12 years ago

I have a Zur the Enchanter EDH deck, around turn 5 i swing him and say Crippling Blight on his geist of saint taft, we argue over who's right. He says its targeting hiw creature but since hexproof make it an invalid target. I say that aura's dont target you casting them requires targeting, enter the battlefield they would just go on a creature. Help?

Aura type card have a ruling to say they target.

702.5a Enchant is a static ability, written Enchant [object or player]. The enchant ability restricts what an Aura spell can target and what an Aura can enchant.

Although Zur the Enchanter have a special extra ruling saying:

If you use Zur the Enchanter's triggered ability to search for an Aura, it will be put onto the battlefield attached to an appropriate permanent. It doesn't target that permanent. If no appropriate permanent exists for it to be attached to, that Aura can't be put onto the battlefield and stays in your library.

MurasakiRose is correct but as an additional point, if an Aura enters the battlefield from anywhere other than the Stack, it will not require a target as such a target is only required when casting the card.

In this case, it is a perfectly valid move for you to move Crippling Blight onto Geist of Saint Traft .

MurasakiRose is incorrect.

Aura spells target. That means you cast it from your hand. However, if auras enter the battlefield from anywhere else: the graveyard, library, or are simply "put" onto the battlefield by ANY other way than casting it, they do not target. Aura type cards do not target.

114.1b Aura spells are always targeted. These are the only permanent spells with targets. An Aura's target is specified by its enchant keyword ability (see rule 702.5, "Enchant"). The target(s) are chosen as the spell is cast; see rule 601.2c. An Aura permanent doesn't target anything; only the spell is targeted.

Zur the Enchanter can put auras on hexproof creatures, since you do not target with the auras.

Also the second part of MurasakiRose's explanation is not specific to Zur the Enchanter . If an aura does not have a legal object to enchant, it will not move to the battlefield. This is true of any aura entering the battlefield from anywhere from any means besides casting it.

"303.4g If an Aura is entering the battlefield and there is no legal object or player for it to enchant, the Aura remains in its current zone, unless that zone is the stack. In that case, the Aura is put into its owner's graveyard instead of entering the battlefield."

Sun Titan has similar conditions like Zur the Enchanter where its target will enter the battlefield then become attached to an appropriate creature rather than targets an appropriate creature.
