Emrakul, the Aeons Torn vs Tormod's Crypt

Asked by Quadsimotto 11 years ago

This has been bugging me all day. If I am playing a mill deck and dump the other guys Emrakul into their yard if I have out a Tormod's Crypt and activate in response can I get rid of that nasty mill crushing card or will it only get rid of the yard and he goes back into the library?

Once Emrakul hits the graveyard, it creates a replacement effect that has your opponent shuffle his library. However, you can use the effect of Tormod's Crypt to quickly exile the graveyard before the ability resolves. Then the replacement effect would resolve, allowing your opponent to shuffle his now-empty graveyard into his library.

@GoldGhost012: That's technically incorrect.

Emrakul, the Aeons Torn 's last ability is a triggered ability. It is NOT a replacement effect - replacement effects don't use the stack, and you can't respond to them. You can respond to the triggered ability.

So close...

Epochalyptik, am I correct in assuming Blightsteel Colossus has a replacement ability since it doesn't have "when", "whenever", or "at" in its ability like Emrakul does?

Yes. You can spot a replacement effect by the use if "Instead"

Yes. You can tell Blightsteel Colossus 's ability creates a replacement effect because it uses the word "instead."
