Eidolon of the Great Revel and alternate costs.
Asked by tooTimid 10 years ago
This has come up a couple of times in some recent cockatrice games.
My opponent has a Eidolon of the Great Revel out. I try to bestow a Herald of Torment onto one of my guys? I assume that because I'm casting him for 5 his cmc is 5, so I don't take damage, but I'm not sure.
I'm also slightly confused about alternate costs like overload (aka Cyclonic Rift ). Turn / Burn is more than confusing. If I fuse it does it count as 2 spells, one with the cmc of 2 and on of 3, or just one spell with a cmc 5.
Thanks! Cheers!
Alternate costs don't count toward cmc. the cmc of Cyclonic Rift is always 2, and the cmc of Herald of Torment is always 3, regardless of which alternate cost you've payed.
Fuse cards are both more difficult and more easy at the same time.
They're more difficult because the mechanics are more complicated.
They're more easy because the mechanics are more readily looked up. They're explicitly spelled out on gatherer on every single fuse card printed.
4/15/2013 To cast a fused split spell, pay both of its mana costs. While the spell is on the stack, its converted mana cost is the total amount of mana in both costs.
4/15/2013 On the stack, a split spell that hasn't been fused has only that half's characteristics and converted mana cost. The other half is treated as though it didn't exist.

The bestow cost is an alternate cost. The mana cost of Herald of Torment is three. As an alternative, you're paying 5 mana to make it an Aura, but its converted mana cost is still three, signified by the 1BB in the upper right corner of the card.
For Overload cards like Cyclonic Rift , its mana cost is 2. However, its Overload cost is 7. You're paying 7 mana, but it's a 2 CMC card.
Turn / Burn and Fuse cards are a bit tricky. If you cast just Turn let's say, then the CMC is 3, and it's just a blue spell with only the abilities specified on the Turn half. However, if you Fuse it, the the CMC is 5, the spell is now U/R, and both halfs will resolve, the Turn side resolving before the Burn side.

Thanks all! Seems like the answer is pretty unanimous! Appreciate it!

There's a couple questions here, I'll do my best. First off, always look at Gatherer. It specifies that when you cast both halves of a split card, its CMC while on the stack becomes the total of both halves. So T/B would be 5 CMC.
As far as Cyclonic Rift , the overload is just a replacement cost. It does not change the CMC of the spell, just gives you an alternate casting cost. So its CMC would still be 2, and you would still take damage from the Eidolon.
I believe that Bestow creatures would work the same way as Cyclonic Rift , so you would still take damage from casting the Herald. I'm not 100% sure though, and haven't found a ruling to back it up.
