Double strike and the legendary artifacts

Asked by daniferrito 11 years ago

How do double-strike and the legendary artifacts interact?

For example, i attack with a Fabled Hero , and i have a Bident of Thassa out. Would i draw two cards, as my creature damaged twice?

And another one: My oponent attacks me with his Fabled Hero and i have Spear of Heliod out. Can i, once it dealt damage to me in the first hit, destroy it using the spear so it doesent hit me again?

You can draw 2 cards for the first one because double strike does deal combat twice.

Not completely sure for the second one but i believe you can as it does deal damage twice seperately.

Ok, so with Fabled Hero and Bident of Thassa , it's all a state based action and you'll get to draw 2 card because a double striker gets 2 cracks at the attack.

With Fabled Hero and Spear of Heliod you will not have time to counter his 2nd attack, only right before his first one or after the last one. You have the ability to counter an attack when declaring blockers, but then it's uncounterable until the creatures have all attacked.

  1. Yes, you will draw 2 cards, because as previously stated, a creature with double-strike deals both first-strike and regular combat damage.
  2. Yes, you will have time to counter (respond to) the second attack with Spear of Heliod before the damage is dealt to you.

A creature with double strike deals damage two distinct times. It will deal damage during both the First Strike Damage Step and the Normal Damage Step. These are two distinct steps during the combat phase, and priority is passed when switching between these steps.

1: Yes. Your creature is dealing damage to a player two distinct times. Each of those two times it deals damage you may draw a card.

2: Yes. Because priority is passed before moving from the First Strike Damage Step to the Normal Damage Step, you will have an opportunity to activate your Spear of Heliod . The Hero will be destroyed before it has a chance to deal its damage during the Normal Damage Step.
