Doomed Necromancer and Mazirek?

Asked by joeyb11223 8 years ago

Can apply to other creatures which sac themselves to bring something else into play but as an example...

Doomed Necromancer sacs itself to bring a creature from the graveyard into play. Does Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest trigger before the creature comes into play thus it won't get a counter, or does it trigger after and so it does gain one?

I know sacrificing a creature as part of a cost to cast a spell causes Mazirek to resolve before the spell. Where as if sacrificing a creature is part of the spells effect Syphon Flesh, he resolves after the spell.

But in Doomed necromancers case...I'm unsure if the cost is the one black mana and him sacrificing himself and dragging a creature back is the effect, thus the creature coming in would benefit from Mazirek, or if sacrificing himself is part of the cost of the effect, so Mazirek triggers before.

Hopefully that makes sense lol.

In the text of an activated ability, everything written before the ":" is part of the cost. Sacrificing Doomed Necromancer is part of the cost of activating its ability.

Read the card from left to right, top to bottom, until you arrive at the colon, (in the case of an ACTIVATED ability) Doomed Necromancer'sActivated Ability has the

THREE FOLLOWING COSTS in the order listed

  1. Pay 1 Black Mana
  2. Tap Doomed Necromancer
  3. Sacrifice Doomed Necromancer

THE ABILITY RESOLVES ONLY AFTER THE COST IS PAID

Therefore, Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest's ability will trigger before the creature in the graveyard comes into play.

As people above have stated, activated abilities are written as "cost:effect", separated by a colon.

The cost to activate Doomed Necromancer is: Pay , him, and sacrifice him.

The moment you sacrifice him, Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest's ability triggers and the ability goes on the stack the next time a player receives priority, which is when the activated ability goes on the stack.

So, Mazirek's ability will resolve first, before the creature is recurred via the Necromancer.
