does scrying an empty library trigger a loss?
Asked by xiao.wen 11 years ago
player (A) has 9 life, nothing but (lets say basic) lands on the battlefield, and 29 cards in the library. player (B) has 28 life, 1 card in library, (basic) lands, and a Battlewise Hoplite with ONE +1/+1.
player (b) draws his remaining card, its a freak luck Assault Strobe . in his hand is a Gods Willing . hitting the hoplite with both spells and swinging would result in a swing for lethal (10), however, im intrigued by the nuance of scry vs draw in terms of a loss condition. obviously a card that would trigger a draw would trigger a loss, but does scrying a library with no remaining cards trigger a loss? i speed-read rules section 104, but didnt see anything about scry specifically.
thats what i gathered as well, just wanted to clarify since the inability to grab the cards for the scry sure feels alot like the key 'no more cards to draw' loss condition.

104.3c If a player is required to draw more cards than are left in his or her library, he or she draws the remaining cards, and then loses the game the next time a player would receive priority. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)

Scrying doesn't cause you to draw cards. It only allows you to look at the top X cards of your library and put them on the top/bottom of your library. The key thing is in the reminder text of Scry: "To scry X, LOOK at the top X cards..." If scry made you draw it would say draw and not scry.

scry
does not cause you do draw cards, and therefore does not cause you to lose a game due to rule 104.3cNone of the other enumerated ways to lose the game under rule 104.3 say anything about scrying.
the only conclusion is that scrying doesn't cause you to lose the game.
