Does regeneration count as a creature dying?

Asked by ikethammond 11 years ago

I read the description for it and wasn't sure.

For example, if I regenerate my Reassembling Skeleton and it's dealt lethal combat damage does it trigger Blood Artist ?

Also, does regeneration work with Bloodflow Connoisseur ? If you regenerate something and then sacrifice it does it become tapped instead of going to the graveyard?

Whoops didn't mean to use Reassembling Skeleton . Make that Grim Roustabout .

Q1) No. Blood Artist triggers when the creature dies. Regeneration creates a replacement effect.

Q2) Also no. When you sacrifice a creature, nothing can stop it from dying.

614.8. Regeneration is a destruction-replacement effect. The word instead doesnt appear on the card but is implicit in the definition of regeneration. Regenerate [permanent] means The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage marked on it and tap it. If its an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat. Abilities that trigger from damage being dealt still trigger even if the permanent regenerates. See rule 701.12.

Sacrificing a creature is not the same as destroying it. Destruction only results from lethal damage or effects that "destroy".

Matsi883, your second answer isn't entirely correct. Dying occurs when a creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. Effects such as Rest in Peace prevent the card or creature from ever reaching the graveyard, and so effects that trigger when a creature dies would not trigger.
