Does Mass Calcify destroy Brutal Hordechief?

Asked by Chandrian 8 years ago

I checked around and if I understood correctly Brutal Hordechief has white in his color identity, therefore he should not be affected by Mass Calcify... but I'm not sure since it's one of the most confusing parts of Magic imo.

Color identity is not the same as Color. Brutal Hordechief is a Black card, so it will be destroyed by Mass Calcify. Brutal Hordechief does have a color identity, but that does not save him from Mass Calcify.

Colour identity is only ever used when making a commander deck, the colour of a card is almost always depicted by the colours in it's converted mana cost.

All right, so the Hordechief dies, but a Zurgo Helmsmasher wouldn't die as he has white in his colors, right?

Correct. Zurgo Helmsmasher is red, white, and black, so he returns positive for anything that checks for those colors. "Nonwhite" means looking for anything without that property, and Zurgo has that property even if it's among others. "Multicolored" is another property, and if an effect was going to include or exclude cards with that property it would say so.
