does Hand of Cruelty benefit from Serra's Blessing?

Asked by Mr_crazydude 11 years ago

If I play Hand of Cruelty and then play Serra's Blessing , does Hand of Cruelty still receive the vigilance effect? Or will the card's 'protection from white' block the enchantments effect?

What if I reversed the order? Play Serra's Blessing first and after it Hand of Cruelty ? (probably the same thing but you never know in mtg :))

Protection from does not stop a board-wide effect like what Serra's Blessing provides. It would prevent any damage from a board-wide spell like Anger of the Gods or Pyroclasm , but unless it is a specific target, protection from will not affect that.

Please don't repost your questions.

Protection from X means four things:

  1. Damage that would be dealt to the protected object by a source of quality X is prevented.
  2. The protected object can't be enchanted or equipped by objects of quality X.
  3. The protected object can't be blocked by creatures of quality X.
  4. The protected object can't be targeted by spells or abilities or quality X.

Because Serra's Blessing doesn't do anything that protection would prevent, a creature with protection from white can still gain vigilance from it.

for protection you just gotta remember the acronym DEBT: Damage, Enchanting/Equipping, Blocking, Targeting. I'll use white as an example to explain:

D= prevents damage from a white source

E=prevents enchanting and equipping by white spells

B= prevents being blocked by white creatures

T= prevents being targeted by a white source

Hand of Cruelty is affected by Serra's Blessing 's ability, because it doesn't damage, enchant/equip, block, or target Hand of Cruelty . Those are the only things protection prevents, which you can easily remember as DEBT.

Serra's Blessing has a static ability that applies as long as it's on the battlefield, to all of your creatures on the battlefield, so if you played a creature afterwards, it would still have vigilance. If you instead played something like Marshaling Cry 's second mode, then played a creature, the creature wouldn't gain vigilance, because the creatures that are affected are "chosen" when that spell resolves.
