Does deathtouch and lifelink work for indirect damage

Asked by Monomanamaniac 7 years ago

Can I benefit from deathtouch and lifelink in other ways than just from attacking? My example is Thornbite Staff + Vampire Nighthawk if the nighthawk is equipped with the staff and taps (with the ability given by the staff), do I get to deal a damage to a creature (thus killing it) and then gain a life? Finally, does the nighthawk untap from the staff because of all that?

Deathtouch and lifelink both apply to noncombat damage dealt by a creature with said abilities.

"702.2c. A creature with toughness greater than 0 that's been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action."

"702.15b Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that sources controller, or its owner if it has no controller, to gain that much life (in addition to any other results that damage causes)."

Activating the ability granted by Thornbite Staff on a Vampire Nighthawk will deal 1 damage to target creature (assuming you didn't target a player), you will gain a life from that damage being dealt, the creature will be destroyed, and the equipped Nighthawk will untap.

Nice. I built a deck around it but I've heard arguments about deathtouch and lifelink. That clears it up a bit
