Does copying a spell count towards the storm count

Asked by dmykle 1 year ago

I am wondering if you could make storm go infinite. Ex. Dualcaster mage + Displace this goes infinite, so if I use this combo 1 billion times; could I then say that casting Ignite Memories has a storm count of 1 billion?

Copying a spell does not count towards storm. Storm counts the number of spells cast.

601.2: "To cast a spell is to take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Casting a spell includes proposal of the spell (rules 601.2a–d) and determination and payment of costs (rules 601.2f–h)."

However, if Dualcaster said "Copy the spell. You may cast the copy without paying it's mana cost" (similar to Mizzix's Mastery), then these copies would count towards storm -- because they were cast.

Forgot to include this section of ruling:

707.10: "To copy a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability means to put a copy of it onto the stack; a copy of a spell isn’t cast..."
