Does Celestial Dawn negate a land's rules text?

Asked by benosmash 9 years ago

Lets say I have Celestial Dawn and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in play. Will Urborg lose its text that says all lands are swamps in addition to their other types?

I ask because Celestial Dawn doesn't mention that the lands lose their abilities.

Whenever an effect says "lands are X" instead of "lands are X in addition to their other types," the effect overrides the other text of those lands. Your lands will lose all of their other abilities, which means Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth will no longer have its ability.

@Epochalyptik If Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth has the first timestamp then all of your opponents lands will still be swamps but if it has the later timestamp then all your lands will be plains and your opponents will be normal.

The effects are both applied in layer 4. If Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth came in first then its effects will apply before it ceases to have any rules text.

In this situation, timestamp isn't considered because there's a dependency involved. The effects of Celestial Dawn and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth apply in the same layer, and Dawn's effect changes the existence of Urborg's effect. This means Urborg is dependent on Dawn, so Dawn is always evaluated first. This is similar to the interaction between Urborg and Blood Moon (explained in the rulings notes on Urborg's Gatherer page).

Oops

Thank you. I didn't realize that a dependency was involved.
