do planeswalkers keep their loyalty counters when targeted by Liquimetal Coating?

I'm wondering because I have 4 Vorel of the Hull Clade and 4 Liquimetal Coating and kind of want to make a walkers deck. so would it work to turn a planeswalker into an artifact, double it with Vorel of the Hull Clade and ultimate it right away?

Once they're there, counters stay on a permanent unless some cost or effect specifically removes them or the card changes zones (Skullbriar, the Walking Grave is the one exception to this). Your idea works.

They will remain planeswalkers. The Artifact type will just be added to them. They will keep all their abilities and will retain whatever counters they had on them. It will work the way you want.
