Do copies of Jace, Cunning Castaway die when copied by Brudiclad?

Asked by CheeseBro 5 years ago

Would creature tokens that are turned into copies of Jace, Cunning Castaway via Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer instantly die due to not having loyalty counters or do they get them from becoming a copy?

They would, yes. Brudiclad would turn your other tokens into copies of one of the Jace tokens, but you have the following problems:

306.5b A planeswalker is treated as if its text box included, “This permanent enters the battlefield with a number of loyalty counters on it equal to its printed loyalty number.” This ability creates a replacement effect (see rule 614.1c).

  • Your other tokens aren't entering the battlefield, so they wouldn't have those starting loyalty counters.

306.9. If a planeswalker’s loyalty is 0, it’s put into its owner’s graveyard. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)

  • The tokens would be put into the graveyard for having 0 loyalty. Since it's a state-based action, this would happen before you have any chance at all to put loyalty counters on the tokens, even if you had some way to do so at instant-speed.

Also, it's important to note that copy effects, including Brudiclad's, only copy what's written on the card itself. Counters, auras, equipment, etc. aren't copied by copy effects.
