devotion during the resolving of a spell

Asked by Sagi007 11 years ago

i my opponent has Nighthowler enchanted withGift of Orzhova out. on the field +his god witch is now a creature due to devotion of 5, if i would cast Far / Away targeting the Nighthowler would he need to sac his god?

thoughts of mine on the andser were:

no, as soon Nighthowler would leave the field god stops being a creature.

yes, devotion issnt checked during the resolve of a spell and thus the god is saced.

devotion is checked every time state based actions are checked. However, state based actions can't be checked during the resolution of a spell so the god you have to get saced (assuming there are no other creatures)

the wording of the gods:

As long as your devotion to black is less than five, Erebos isn't a creature.,

makes it look very much like a static ability which isn't checked at all, it just always is.

and since the left side of the fuse spell happens before the right half, it looks like Erebos, God of the Dead won't be a creature at that time, and your opponent won't have to sacrifice it.

Devotion is not checked every time state-based actions are checked. It is simply a set of information, like how many creatures a player controls. Sam_I_am is correct in that Erebos's second ability is a static ability, and is always true. Therefore, by the time the Away half of Far/Away happens, Erebos will not be a creature, and will not have to be sacrificed.
