Dealing Damage To A Player

Asked by onthestack 12 years ago

If falkenrath-marauder deals combat damage to Chandra, the Firebrand , does falkenrath-marauder get the two +1/+1 counters?

No, Planeswalkers are not "players".

I don't know where the ruling is though, sorry =S

No, "Note that planeswalkers are neither creatures nor players, so most spells and abilities cannot target them directly." so a Flame Slash could not target a planeswalker. If it read "whenever Falkenrath Marauders deals combat damage to a creature or a player, it gets 2 +1/+1 counters" then, it would. But in this case it would not get the counters.

It still wouldn't if it said "creature or a player", planeswalkers are neither.

It would if it said "Whenever this creature does combat damage...." Then it would work.

Planeswalkers are opponents, but not players.

"Other sources can deal damage to planeswalkers. If a spell or ability you control would deal damage to an opponent, you may have it deal that damage to a planeswalker that opponent controls instead. So while you can't target a planeswalker with a Shock, you can have a Shock that targets your opponent deal 2 damage to one of his or her planeswalkers instead of to the player."

306.5b A planeswalker is treated as if its text box included, "This permanent enters the battlefield with a number of loyalty counters on it equal to its printed loyalty number." This ability creates a replacement effect (see rule 614.1c).

306.6. Planeswalkers can be attacked. (See rule 508, "Declare Attackers Step.")

306.7. If noncombat damage would be dealt to a player by a source controlled by an opponent, that opponent may have that source deal that damage to a planeswalker the first player controls instead. This is a redirection effect (see rule 614.9) and is subject to the normal rules for ordering replacement effects (see rule 616). The opponent chooses whether to redirect the damage as the redirection effect is applied.

Planeswalkers are neither players nor opponents. They are permanents with they own "health" (loyalty). Any damage down to a player can be redirected to one of their planeswalkers. Then damage is not dealt to the player at this point. So if your Falkenrath Marauders deals its damage to your opponents planeswalker, it will not get the counters.

You could however give it a Sword of War and Peace , have it deal damage to the player so the Falkenrath Marauders gets the counters, then redirect the damage from the Sword of War and Peace to their planeswalker.

Also note. Losing life cannot be redirected or reduced. This means if you make your opponent lose life (with something like Sign in Blood ), you cannot redirect that to their planeswalker.

@jmbPlaneswalkers are not considered opponents. They are a permanent, and can be attacked due to the rules for planeswalkers. They are not players, nor opponents.
