Darksteel Juggernaut

So.. Darksteel Juggernaut power and toughness is equal to the number of artifacts I control. If I have at least 5 on the field when Mayael the Anima 's effect is activated, could I use her to put it on the field, or does it have a power/toughness of 0/0 while anywhere except the battlefield?

Yes you can.

The ability from Darksteel Juggernaut is a CDA so it will work in all zones.

Tarmogoyf and Slag Fiend work the same.

Characteristic defining ability.

Scorpse is right, characteristic defining abilities work in all zones, and even from outside the game (for the purposes of the Wish cards).

X is not a CDA, but text that defines * is.

Therefore, in any zone besides the battlefield, X is treated as 0, but * is treated as defined.

@LuminousDemonProductions

i did not say that x is a CDA (it cannot be as cda is an entire ability, and x is a variable, so it's *).X has nothing to do with CDA. Basically you need to identify if an ability is a CDA and then see other variables.

In fact you are wrong about the x. X is treated as announced on the stack, not on the battlefield (so it's Y for older cards), because X appears in the Casting Cost (CC) of spells.

I meant X as in the variable X, not the variable mana cost Defined as X.

If a spell or ability has a cost with an X in it, the value of X must be announced as part of playing the spell or ability. (See rule 409, Playing Spells and Activated Abilities.) While the spell or ability is on the stack, the Manax.gif in its mana cost equals the amount announced as part of playing the spell or ability. If a card in any other zone has Manax.gif in its mana cost, the amount is treated as 0. If youre playing a spell that has Manax.gif in its mana cost and an effect lets you play it without paying any cost that includes Manax.gif, the only legal choice for Manax.gif is 0. This does not apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero. See rule 409, Playing Spells and Activated Abilities.

In other cases, X is defined by the text of a spell or ability. If X isnt defined, the controller of the spell or ability chooses the value of X. All Xs on an object have the same value.
