Dark Prophecy and Whip of Erebos

Asked by Bauhom 11 years ago

Do creatures whipped back from the grave using Whip of Erebos "die" if destroyed, triggering Dark Prophecy 's effect? I think the answer is yes because the replacement effect doesn't replace dying, it replaces where it goes.

"Dies" means "put into a graveyard from the battlefield". If something is exiled, it doesn't "die".

But the Whip's replacement effect doesn't replace dying, as for example Anger of the Gods does. It just seems to replace where the creature goes if it would leave the battlefield.

Something only "dies" if, as Mazz said, it goes to the graveyard from the battlefield. If it goes to exile instead of the graveyard, it doesn't match the "Dies" condition. I stand by my view that dies was a bad choice in term, same with fight.

The Whip of Erebos says "If it would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else".

Hence it doesn't go to the graveyard, so it doesn't die.

Okay, you're right.

Wiki: "Dies used to be a keyword action in Magic similar to "destroy" and was reintroduced in Magic 2012 to replace the phrase "is put into a graveyard from the battlefield""
