damaging a planeswalker

Can the ability from Soul of Shandalar do damage to a player with the player being a planeswalker as in Jace, Architect of Thought ?

Any damage that would be dealt to a player may be redirected to a planeswalker that player controls, unless it's combat damage. You can simply say, "I will Lightning Bolt your Jace, the Mind Sculptor ," and that will be fine. Soul of Shandalar can use its abilities to deal damage to planeswalkers.
When it comes to combat, you must actually attack the planeswalker (and say that you are doing so) in order for damage to be dealt to the planeswalker.

Significantly, planeswalkers are not players. Effects that target players can't target planeswalkers.

Planeswalkers can't do certain things. They can't discard or draw cards, for example. They can't sacrifice creatures. Only noncombat damage can be redirected from opponents to planeswalkers.

@GlistenerAgent: You said "Any damage that would be dealt to a player ... " It's actually any damage that would be dealt to an opponent. It's a fairly minor thing, but it can be quite relevant (I play EDH, every little thing can be relevant). Just something to keep in mind.

So Soul of Shandalar cannot deal damage to a planeswalker because it says target player and not target opponent? Is that correct?

No. As FancyTuesday quoted, there's a redirection rule that allows you to redirect noncombat damage that would be dealt to an opponent to a planeswalker that player controls instead. So while you can't target the planeswalker, you can target its controller and redirect the damage as the ability is resolving.
I mean no offense, but did you read any of the other answers?

You may direct any damage that would be done to a player to a Planeswalker they control.
306.7 If noncombat damage would be dealt to a player by a source controlled by an opponent, that opponent may have that source deal that damage to a planeswalker the first player controls instead. This is a redirection effect (see rule 614.9) and is subject to the normal rules for ordering replacement effects (see rule 616). The opponent chooses whether to redirect the damage as the redirection effect is applied.
