Copying a deflecting swat
Asked by wargunner1937 4 years ago
Player one casts Meteor Golem targetting player 2's Ramos, Dragon Engine. In response, player 2 casts Deflecting Swat targetting Meteor Golem's ability to change the target to one of player one's creatures. Player 3 casts Dualcaster Mage creating a copy of Deflecting Swat. Is there any way that player 3 could change the target of the original Deflecting Swat or does player 2 get to decide what the new target of Meteor Golem will be since their Deflecting Swat resolves after the copy of Deflecting Swat?

If the second deflecting swat is used to change the target it won't have any effect. The meteor golem's ability is on the stack, then the first deflecting swat, then the second deflecting swat. The second swat resolves first, changing meteor golems target, then the first deflecting swat resolves, changing the target, then the golem resolves and goes in the direction the first swat directed because it resolves last. Just as Neotrup said, they could change the first deflecting swat to effectively counter the effect and allow meteor golem to hit its original target, but if it tries to change the target of meteor golem it will fail because the first swat resolves last

The copy of Deflecting Swat can be used to change the target of the original Deflecting Swat to the copy, which will result in it fizzling. This means Player 3 can force Meteor Golem's target to remain unchanged, but they won't be able to change it to one of their own choosing.
