Concerning Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar and Haunted One, will Haunted One's effect work on a sacrificed creature?

Asked by DrukenReaps 9 months ago

Just checking on when Haunted One will effect my creatures exactly. If I go to sacrifice Taborax, Hope's Demise to Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar will it gain the +2/+0 and Undying before it actually dies? Since Shadowheart is being tapped and the creature is being sacrificed as part of the same cost I wasn't totally sure... Thanks in advance.

Since tapping and sacrificing the creature are both part of the cost, Haunted One will not give the sacrificed creature undying (assuming it stays dead).

When you activate Shadowheart, you'll put the ability onto the stack and pay all costs (tapping, sacrificing a creature, some mana). Now that an ability has gone onto the stack, the game checks State Based Actions to see if anything has triggered. In this case, Haunted One wants to trigger, so it's ability is also put onto the stack. However, the creature is already dead, so when Haunted One resolves it won't affect it (again assuming it stays dead. If you reanimate it in response to the trigger it'll gain undying).

That's unfortunate, thanks Delphen7.
