No. Your commander must be a legendary creature card in its primary form (for example, Erayo, Soratami AscendantMTG Card: Erayo, Soratami Ascendant was legal before being banned on the basis of power because it was a legendary creature by default).

903.1. In the Commander variant, each deck is led by a legendary creature designated as that deck's commander. The Commander variant was created and popularized by fans; an independent rules committee maintains additional resources at http://mtgcommander.net. The Commander variant uses all the normal rules for a Magic game, with the following additions.

me and my friends were thinking of making EDH decks with enchantments or artifacts as generals maybe not even legendary ones to make the possibilities more wide but of course there would be a mssive amount of bannings in house for this lol for example no Sol RingMTG Card: Sol Ring or Umezawa's JitteMTG Card: Umezawa's Jitte as commanders just for a start lol :-) I fancy a Legacy WeaponMTG Card: Legacy Weapon general jus cuz its my favourite artifact ever! :-)

If you're playing Commander anywhere outside of your circle of friends, it must be a Legendary Creature. That's just the accepted rule.

However, there's nothing stopping you and your usual circle of friends from using other Legendary permanents and determining their color identities. EDH is, after all, the casual format.
