Colorless Mana, No color or Any color ?

Asked by Pawaw 11 years ago

So I'm back to playing magic after 10 years and a huge doubt got me yesterday while building my new deck : The Slender Wither, But I'm Fat..When I tap Rogue's Passage , I Add (1) to my mana pool. The way I read this is "Add one colorless mana to your mana pool" but does colorless mean that it's 1 mana that I can use to pay the Mana Costs represented in the grey circles only ? Or can that colorless mana become a Blue Mana to pay the cost or Vorel of the Hull Clade for example in a G/B Deck ? Thank You for your time !

Rogue's Passage does add colorless mana. Colorless mana can only be used to pay for the colorless (grey) parts of mana cost. You can use Rogue's Passage to pay for the 1 in Vorel of the Hull Clade's mana cost, but not the Green or Blue parts.

Transguild Promenade 's ability lets you make mana to spend on the colored portion of spells. Note how it says "add one mana of any color to your mana pool" instead of showing the 1 in a gray circle.

Yeah it can be confusing since colorless mana in casting costs are usually thought of as "a mana of any color" but the 2 things are different when producing them. Just thought I'd add in an example to aid understanding.
