colorless EDH, and "tap: add one mana of any color" on a source

Asked by linkofhyrule 13 years ago

lets say i have Karn, Silver GolemMTG Card: Karn, Silver Golem as my commander, and i include Alloy MyrMTG Card: Alloy Myr in my deck (both colorless as far as the rules go for summoning, and EDH color identity)

if i were to tap the myr for mana, what color can i make? the rules say colorless isn't a valid choice for "of any color", and EDH/Commander says you can't make mana of a color that's not on your commander's identity. Would Alloy MyrMTG Card: Alloy Myr just be a little version of Palladium MyrMTG Card: Palladium Myr, by making only one colorless, or would it be useless for mana production?

It would produce colorless mana. If a source would produce any color of mana that is not in your commander's color identity, it produces colorless instead. You will be able to name any color of mana to add, but when the ability resolves it will add one colorless instead.

Alloy MyrMTG Card: Alloy Myr will produce (1) when its mana ability is activated.

903.9. If mana would be added to a player's mana pool of a color that isn't in the color identity of that players commander, that amount of colorless mana is added to that player's mana pool instead.

Since Karn has no colours in its colour identity, this effect is applied to any mana that you try to produce.
