Color Identity

Asked by goodair 9 years ago

Is Eastern Valley color identity black, or is it black white? I'm not really sure if it can go in my Jund EDH deck.

Color: Black, Colorless
Type: Land, Legendary Creature

Tap Symbol: Add to your mana pool.

5 Mana, Tap Symbol, Pay 1 life: Put a 1/1 white and black Human Cleric creature token onto the battlefield.

5 Mana, Tap Symbol, Sacrifice five creatures: Transform Abbey in the Eastern Valley, then untap it.

Flying, lifelink, indestructible, haste.

It's identity is only . This is because the reverse side is defined as being black per the color indicator on the type line.

The 2nd activated ability on the "sun side" or "default side" says "...put a 1/1 white and black token into play."

Cards that say the name of a color do not take that into account when determining color identity.

The "sun" on the front side and the "moon" on the flip side do not represent color identity, in case you got confused by them. They only represent which side is the default side and which side is not. The "sun side" is the default state.

Color identity is every type of mana symbol on the card. General Tazri would be every color because in it's effect it has "wubrg:", so it's color identity would be every color.Archangel Avacyn would have a white and red color identity because of it's red symbol next to "Legendary Creature," to the left, when it's flipped over. This symbol was used by wizards to define what color the flipped version was. Another example is Garruk, the Veil-Cursed, which has a green/black circle, and would have a green/black color identity.

Worthy to note that if there is a mana symbol in the text of a card but it is within parentheses, that symbol is excluded when determining the identity of a card. (See Crypt Ghast)

Also, to reaffirm VaraSatoshiOfficial's comment, a further example would be Memnarch. While it has no mana symbols in its CMC, it has a symbol in its text, thus making its identity Blue.

Raging_Squiggle thank you for reminding me of that, I forgot to mention it.
