Cloneing a scion of the Vitu Ghazi
Asked by Arachnarchist 11 years ago
If you cast a Clone from your hand and it resolves and you choose to copy a scion of the vitu ghazi, will you get the Scion's enters-the-battlefield ability? Basically, does the scion's ability require that you cast a card named scion of the vitu ghazi from your hand?
You'lll get the ETB ability because Clone enters the battlefield as the copied creature. One of the reasons clone effects are good.

@Goody: Exactly the source of my confusion.
A few days ago, I thought I discovered an infinite combo via Scion of Vitu-Ghazi + Cackling Counterpart . But then I reread the scion and found that wouldn't work, but that lead me to this.

I think it'd work. Normally, whenever a card refers to itself, it isn't referring to the card's name, but to "this card"; that's why things like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn calls itself just Emrakul. Clone isn't Scion of Vitu-Ghazi on the stack, but as it enters the battlefield, it was cast from your hand.

Yes, Clone has the ETB triggers of cards he copies.
And yes, you are casting the card from your hand (clone) so the ability will trigger.

Goody is right. A card referring to itself by name without saying something like "a card named XX" simply means "this guy", and it will keep that meaning even if its name changes for some reason (like in your example, from a copy effect).

But it is not an infinite combo with Cackling Counterpart because it must enter from your hand to get the trigger.

So if for some reason you haven't killed them on the extra turn after casting Emrakul, you can Clone him and swing again with another turn!

No, wait, that doesn't work. Darn. I keep misreading cards.

Well, you can do that with the new legend rules from M14.

What he means is that the Clone isn't a copy of Emrakul yet at the time the "when you cast" ability would trigger. That's why it doesn't work.
