Child of Alara EDH questions
Asked by Crash308 12 years ago
I'm working on making a rainbow Commander deck. I do not want to use Progenitus due to its high converted mana cost. I looked towards Maelstrom Archangel but she isn't a legendary creature.. So I'm left with Child of Alara . But will Child of Alara s ability activate? Because I don't think commanders go to the graveyard, I thought they were exiled back to the commander zone. Help!
- If Child of Alara is your commander, and dies, will its ability activate?

To elaborate, with any commander, the choice to move it to the command zone instead of Exile/Graveyard, its entirely optional. Once you allow it to go to either zone you cant change your mind.

To elaborate on BrokenZygoma's answer, Child of Alara 's ability will only trigger if you send it to the graveyard instead of the command zone when it dies. Since the command zone and graveyard are different zones, an ability that triggers when a creature dies will not trigger when a creature is put into the command zone.
When a commander would die or get exiled, its owner has the choice of applying a replacement effect to send the commander back to the command zone. If he or she does, the commander never hits the graveyard or exile. If he or she does not, the commander is placed into the graveyard or exile and cannot be retroactively returned to the command zone unless some new effect would put it there.

When Child of Alara dies, you have the choice to move it to the command zone instead. You CAN let it die, but it is then stuck in your graveyard until you can bring it back to your hand/deck/battlefield somehow.
