Champion of the Parish

So does Adaptive Automaton enter the battlefield as a human if thats what you choose and trigger the champions effect? or not, the text thats confusing me is the "AS adaptive automaton enters the battlefield choose a creature type" makes it sound like it does.

That's what I always thought. Yeah, I'm on the boat with you brother. I'm gonna have a convo about that next FNM. Unless somebody knows.

The additional type abilities of Automaton are static abilities. Static abilities function continuously on the battlefield, thus it is a human from start to end on the battlefield. Thus it will trigger Champion.

It's an important distinction.

"As [This card] enters the battlefield..." means that it functions on the way from the stack to the battlefield, basically. It's a replacement effect that changes the way the card enters the field, so it's not an ability that can be interacted with in any way. The permanent never exists on the field without the qualities that such an ability dictates. (In this case, the Automaton never exists as anything but a human, so it does trigger Champion.)

"When [This card] enters the battlefield...", on the other hand, is entirely different. It's a triggered ability that happens only when the card has entered the field and landed, so the trigger doesn't even go on the stack until the creature has already set foot on the field. At that point, because it's a triggered ability and it uses the stack, it can be responded to and manipulated in some ways. And, relevant here, "When...enters the battlefield" triggers won't interact with effects that look for things entering the battlefield.

yes. as it states in the comprehensive rule book, 603.6b says "Continuous effects that modify characteristics of a permanent do so the moment the permanent is on the battlefield (and not before then). The permanent is never on the battlefield with its unmodified characteristics."this is to say that indeed Adaptive Automaton has a continuous effect that will modify it at all times when it is on the battlefield, including at the precise time it enters. this also has similar wording as Clone and that must enter as the creature it is coppying or you will be in trouble

Thank you both for the answer, that will clear up confusion about other things as well for me.

Mozer was the one who actually answered the question though. I just ramble-elaborated. =p

Well all right answers are equally good in my opinion, i dont like the rules text citations even when it is nessecary to back something up.

Meh, the only reason I brought it up is because I don't want to feel like - or look like I'm trying to be - a know-it-all who swooped in after a correct answer was given to steal it away.

Elaborating and making things clearer is one thing, and that's what I'm trying to do, but kill-stealing know-it-alls annoy me IRL and I will go through great lengths to make it clear that I don't want to be one. =p

I'm glad that my explanations help clarify, though.
