Casting Creature with Flash During Combat Phase
Asked by BJ.the.Fiend 8 years ago
Scenario:
3 Islands, 1 Faerie Miscreant with Ciphered Hidden Strings in play; Faerie Invaders in hand
Attack with Faerie Miscreant, no blocks
Can I tap 3 islands during combat phase but before damage, then immediately following damage, untap 2 islands from Hidden Strings, and use the additional 2 mana to cast Faerie Invaders? Thank you!

Pointing out one thing, your mana pool empties between phases and steps. So if you say you're tapping three islands for mana before damage is being dealt, when you move to the combat damage step (when the cipher trigger triggers since the trigger requires the creature to deal combat damage to a player) your mana pool will empty and will no longer have three mana in your pool. You can, however, respond to the cipher trigger going onto the stack to put mana into your pool.
So after combat damage is dealt, the cipher trigger is place onto the stack. You can tap three islands for mana in response to the trigger hitting the stack. When the cipher trigger for Hidden Strings resolves, you can tap or untap a target permanent (untap an island) and tap or untap another target permanent (untap another island). Then you may tap these islands again for mana to gain the 5 mana required for Faerie Invaders

Not quite. Cipher requires that combat damage be done to the player to trigger, so Hidden Strings won't cast its copy until the combat damage step after the damage gets dealt (which is a turn based action that doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to). However, once the copy is on the stack, you can tap lands to add mana to your mana pool, wait for the copy to resolve, untapping two lands, add then tapping again to add two more mana (total of 5) to cast the Faerie Invaders.
